First Draft/Idea for print product.

This was my first idea for a print product. I used Ashley Costello from New Year's Day as she has similar hair to me and so this helps me to visualize what I can do with this. This is the design for the front of my album - I was trying to make it have a vignette kind of effect with a dark layer. I created a square and made the edges as dark as I could and layered it up. I then placed 'Dark Strokes' into the layer on photo shop and it gave the cool dark effect on her.

Analysis Of Print Products - Tour Poster // Butcher Babies VS In This Moment

This tour poster were made while the Butcher Babies were touring their first album - Goliath. During this album cycle they released 3 singles - Magnolia Blvd, I Smell a Massacre and C8H18 (Gasoline). This allowed them to go on their own headlining tour of the US. They posted the first poster on Instagram, Facebook and used the bands twitter to promote the tour. The poster itself shows the front women of the band Heidi and Carla. The poster mainly focuses on the girls of the band as they are the main selling point of the band - the metal genre and fans are very sexist towards girls in metal bands which is why they are pushed for most of the press and are on the poster - it says that yes they are girls and they made it. The poster also has a lyric from one of the singles - 'no one can hear you scream' is a lyric from Magnolia Blvd, which was the lead single and a fan favorite. The photos are all taken from a live show and are edited to be in black and white, which makes the logo and the information regarding the support band stand out.
Butcher Babies toured with In This Moment in early 2014, and the tour poster was very different.
In This Moment are huge on visuals - they have a massive elaborate stage show and this is reflected in the poster. The band have an artist who creates all their tour artwork and some of their CD artwork.
The poster reflects a few things - In This Moment are becoming a popular band, popular enough to start playing theaters - they want people to know the venue and so the artists names have been shown about a theater entrance. In This Moment's name are at the top as they are the headliners, which Butcher Babies logo underneath - although this is the wrong logo as they began to use a different one in 2013. The sponsors are shown either side of the theater entrance with a digital drawing of Maria Brink in her stage outfit. It also references Godzilla with the planes around which can relate to their single 'Whore' as Maria wanted it to be an empowering song, and with her being larger then the theater can represent that empowerment. The tour is called Hellpop which is shown at the top with a spotlight showing 'Tour 2'. This power is very different to the Butcher Babies - this one is almost over the top in visuals and keeps the attention because there is so much to look at, but Butchers Babies went for a more simple and more raw look with the live photos - it encourages you to go see them live yourself. It also clearly states Butcher Babies are the headliners with the support underneath, whereas on the Hellpop poster the headliner and supports can get a little lost in skyline and smoke next to the theater entrance.

Analysis of Video + Print Product - Tears Don't Fall by Bullet For My Valentine // Metalcore

This is Tears Don't Fall by Bullet For My Valentine. It's one of the biggest selling singles of their debut album, The Poison. The Poison debuted at 128 on the billboard 200 and sold around 1,500,000 copies. One of the leading singles off the album - it was released in June 2006, being the last single to be released off the album. It is a fan favorite.
The single was first released with the blue artwork. It was released as CD with a Pantera cover, an unreleased version of the music video and a desktop wallpaper. The actual artwork is related to the music video - the video is in blue hues, especially as the band play in the rain. Blue represents sad or unhappy feelings which is reflected in the video and the artwork. The main focus of the photo is the girl - she's wiping a tear away which represents the name of the song and again connects to the video through what she's wearing, as the main girl character wears a tank top. The background of the artwork shows a Forrest and mist with drums behind her, representing the band. The bands main logo is in white, standing out against the blue. Beneath it is the title of the song, also in white to stand out and catch people's eye when in a shop.
The next singles artwork uses the same titles and the same Forrest background, but instead there is a person dressed a ninja with fire in the background, this could be to show empowerment of the girl in the video or empowerment within the lyrics of the song. The version of the CD single is rare and included three live versions of songs off The Poison.
The band released a vinyl for Tears Don't Fall, with it being very different to the other single covers. It featured the man in the video bending over backward while the girl in the car just sits. The car is different to the one in the video - in the video they were driving a Ford pick up truck, where as this car looks more like a Dodge Challenger. This can be shown as wealth on the woman's side and also represents power. The background is similar to the others, except it is red with a stencil background and the forrest/dead trees at the side and back of the artwork. It does feature the same titles as the others. The vinyl also included a Metallica cover.

The video begins with a zoom out onto an empty road with just the pickup truck. This can show a getaway or an escape. It cuts to show the woman sitting sideways and fluffing her hair out and looking suggestive - this ties in with the male gaze as she is the first thing we see in the video. The next shot then shows what she was looking at - the man driving. He grins at her, but his eyes are covered with sunglasses so we cannot see what he was truly thinking. They both give off the impression they are slightly scruffy. Their relationship is then shown as the camera cuts to them holding hands. The first shot of the band begins - it is a medium close up as everyone is shown in the shot but the background is cut out. It then cuts to the lead singer as he being to scream the first lyrics. They edited it to make the camera shake to make it more intense. It then cuts to close ups of the band with them all being rained on. The woman and man are shown again looking suggestive at each other. It then cuts back to the lead singer which panning round and cuts between the man and the woman and the band. The video then shows the car pulling up to motel with the man hugging the woman close. The band shots pan round the main singer and the rest of the band, but mainly focuses on the singer. When the singer begins to scream again, they've edited it so that the camera looks like its shaking again to match the screaming. The next shot of the man shows him handing over a wad of money and a hand creeping round his face - this is symbolic later in the video. It then begins to show them in the bedroom, with the camera panning round to show a mirror and the camera twists round. One of the next shots of the band is a pan and it shows two of the band stop playing for second while drawing attention to the guitarist. The next line 'The moment's died' shows the woman trying to kiss the man and he pushes her away and she looks offended. The camera then shows the gas being empty, with it coming from the POV of the man. He fills the truck up and she tries to win him back but he just gets frustrated and drops the gasoline but it goes on her. They argue and he drives off - this can be show the end of the relationship or maybe to show frustration. He drives back to the motel and finds another girl and begins the same routine - the original woman finally reaches the motel after walking, and drapes herself on the truck before making her mind up. The door opens on the man and his new woman as the original woman hold the fuel tank and starts tipping it all over them and the bed herself. She strikes a match and then puts it in the oil, only to reveal it was water and she walks out by blowing them a sarcastic kiss. The main point of the video is to say that you have consequences for messing with peoples feelings, as the song reflects this.

Video Progress

15/10/15

Began to match the lip syncing to the song. I split up the video into where each part over laps each other - I have three different shots of the first part of the verse so it's easy to match them up and not have any gaps or any different bits.

17/11/15
Came to back to my music video. Began putting filters onto the video and rearranging and placing the chorus and second verse.

3/12/15

Filmed with Jacob and Chelsea and began to cut up the pieces that work and space them out and mix them into the shots of me singing. Began editing the shots - one of my scenes I have put into black & white and sharpened it up to make it look more concentrated.

Another scene I put into a similar colors using a color correcter - it looks like mix between white noise and black and white.
The other scene of me singing I have edited to look more intense - it is darker with the colours bright and the contrast raised to make it this way.
The scenes with my friends are edited differently - I left the scenes of Jacob asleep alone as they will show that this is reality while all his other scenes are edited to be dark and look unrealistic as this is to show the nightmare. Chelsea's scenes are all within his 'nightmare' and so all her scenes are edited to also look unrealistic.

Audience Profiling

A media product is made to be consumed but you have to know what audience to aim for. In This Moment aim for the crossover of the hard rock genre and metal genre, giving them an audience age of 15 to 53. I would be aiming for the same kind of age range.
They are related and advertised along a lot of bands - Maria also does collaboration with other bands, for example:
Papa Roach - Gravity
Five Finger Death Punch - Anywhere But Here
Motionless In White - Comtempress
Red Dragon Cartel - Big Mouth
P.O.D - Criminal Conversations
They did a huge american tour with Papa Roach & Five Finger Death Punch to help further advertise their album.
They are also considered part/related of the 'new grave' movement of bands, which Motionless in White are considered a part of. In the video 'Whore' the lead singer of Motionless in White was one of the main characters and New Years Day's videos are advertised alongside In This Moments. This means that In This Moment have a broad audience and have range of audience to target.
Out of their audience I would be targeting the new grave audience as they are younger side of the metal genre and are therefore more likely to listen, research the band and buy the CD/Merch.
I would target this audience by releasing a single on youtube with the music video and have it connected to a few of the similar bands the same way In This Moment has as my audience would then click on the video and watch. I would also promoted the single through music magazines and through social media - mainly Facebook and Instagram.
