Video production feedback
The candidate
demonstrates excellence in the creative use of most technical skills allowing
level 4 to be reached as best fit. The production clearly fulfils the task and
fits the chosen genre demonstrating an excellent awareness of codes an
conventions of the music video in branding the artist with close ups with
careful lip synching.
A clear
understanding of the genre gained by research allows the candidate to create a
music video which targets an audience that would like the metal genre of music. Editing skills are excellent and the style
and pace of the video are appropriate to the genre. Use of mise-en-scene is considered. Hair and
make up are used to construct a persona to brand the artist and props
re-inforce the themes of the video and song. Framing and composition are used
effectively to create cropped shots that intrigue the viewer and allow a focus
on the artist. Lip synching is achieved with excellent skill and is a key
success in the video which fulfils its purpose therefore material shot is
appropriate to the task. Some shots changed so they are on their side are les
successful and the narrative could have been clearer. Time lapse shots of a tree show
experimentation. The shots are quite abstract and link with the genre. Use of
the camera is proficient. Audience feedback should allow the candidate
to consider the effectiveness of these. The candidate worked alone on all
aspects. 32/40

Print Product Second Idea
I continued to work on top of the photo of Ash Costello to add small details into the photo - i think placed a Polaroid frame around it as I have had a further idea to layer the photos.

November feedback
Some analysis of print products is presented using illustrative examples. Some analysis of music videos
Personalise research by looking at products made by similar artists.
Planning is incomplete although you have made the posts. Use your Advanced Portfolio booklet to guide you and make sure all planning documentation is published.
You are beginning to document the creative journey by using screenshots. You need to comment on these and explain what skills you are developing.
Storyboards, drafts, sketches. We need to see the developmnet of your ideas.
Spend time updating your web-log. At present your research and planning is low level 2 which you can improve upon.
You have begun an edit and now need to catch up on time missed. I like the use of effects and exploring speed and duration in clips. Make your creative decisions clear on the web-log.
Film footage as soon as possible.
Edit a first cut in the next two weeks.
Respond to feedback.

First Draft/Idea for print product.
This was my first idea for a print product. I used Ashley Costello from New Year's Day as she has similar hair to me and so this helps me to visualize what I can do with this. This is the design for the front of my album - I was trying to make it have a vignette kind of effect with a dark layer. I created a square and made the edges as dark as I could and layered it up. I then placed 'Dark Strokes' into the layer on photo shop and it gave the cool dark effect on her.

Analysis Of Print Products - Tour Poster // Butcher Babies VS In This Moment
This tour poster were made while the Butcher Babies were touring their first album - Goliath. During this album cycle they released 3 singles - Magnolia Blvd, I Smell a Massacre and C8H18 (Gasoline). This allowed them to go on their own headlining tour of the US. They posted the first poster on Instagram, Facebook and used the bands twitter to promote the tour. The poster itself shows the front women of the band Heidi and Carla. The poster mainly focuses on the girls of the band as they are the main selling point of the band - the metal genre and fans are very sexist towards girls in metal bands which is why they are pushed for most of the press and are on the poster - it says that yes they are girls and they made it. The poster also has a lyric from one of the singles - 'no one can hear you scream' is a lyric from Magnolia Blvd, which was the lead single and a fan favorite. The photos are all taken from a live show and are edited to be in black and white, which makes the logo and the information regarding the support band stand out.
Butcher Babies toured with In This Moment in early 2014, and the tour poster was very different.
In This Moment are huge on visuals - they have a massive elaborate stage show and this is reflected in the poster. The band have an artist who creates all their tour artwork and some of their CD artwork.
The poster reflects a few things - In This Moment are becoming a popular band, popular enough to start playing theaters - they want people to know the venue and so the artists names have been shown about a theater entrance. In This Moment's name are at the top as they are the headliners, which Butcher Babies logo underneath - although this is the wrong logo as they began to use a different one in 2013. The sponsors are shown either side of the theater entrance with a digital drawing of Maria Brink in her stage outfit. It also references Godzilla with the planes around which can relate to their single 'Whore' as Maria wanted it to be an empowering song, and with her being larger then the theater can represent that empowerment. The tour is called Hellpop which is shown at the top with a spotlight showing 'Tour 2'. This power is very different to the Butcher Babies - this one is almost over the top in visuals and keeps the attention because there is so much to look at, but Butchers Babies went for a more simple and more raw look with the live photos - it encourages you to go see them live yourself. It also clearly states Butcher Babies are the headliners with the support underneath, whereas on the Hellpop poster the headliner and supports can get a little lost in skyline and smoke next to the theater entrance.
Analysis of Video + Print Product - Tears Don't Fall by Bullet For My Valentine // Metalcore
The single was first released with the blue artwork. It was released as CD with a Pantera cover, an unreleased version of the music video and a desktop wallpaper. The actual artwork is related to the music video - the video is in blue hues, especially as the band play in the rain. Blue represents sad or unhappy feelings which is reflected in the video and the artwork. The main focus of the photo is the girl - she's wiping a tear away which represents the name of the song and again connects to the video through what she's wearing, as the main girl character wears a tank top. The background of the artwork shows a Forrest and mist with drums behind her, representing the band. The bands main logo is in white, standing out against the blue. Beneath it is the title of the song, also in white to stand out and catch people's eye when in a shop.
The next singles artwork uses the same titles and the same Forrest background, but instead there is a person dressed a ninja with fire in the background, this could be to show empowerment of the girl in the video or empowerment within the lyrics of the song. The version of the CD single is rare and included three live versions of songs off The Poison.
The band released a vinyl for Tears Don't Fall, with it being very different to the other single covers. It featured the man in the video bending over backward while the girl in the car just sits. The car is different to the one in the video - in the video they were driving a Ford pick up truck, where as this car looks more like a Dodge Challenger. This can be shown as wealth on the woman's side and also represents power. The background is similar to the others, except it is red with a stencil background and the forrest/dead trees at the side and back of the artwork. It does feature the same titles as the others. The vinyl also included a Metallica cover.
The video begins with a zoom out onto an empty road with just the pickup truck. This can show a getaway or an escape. It cuts to show the woman sitting sideways and fluffing her hair out and looking suggestive - this ties in with the male gaze as she is the first thing we see in the video. The next shot then shows what she was looking at - the man driving. He grins at her, but his eyes are covered with sunglasses so we cannot see what he was truly thinking. They both give off the impression they are slightly scruffy. Their relationship is then shown as the camera cuts to them holding hands. The first shot of the band begins - it is a medium close up as everyone is shown in the shot but the background is cut out. It then cuts to the lead singer as he being to scream the first lyrics. They edited it to make the camera shake to make it more intense. It then cuts to close ups of the band with them all being rained on. The woman and man are shown again looking suggestive at each other. It then cuts back to the lead singer which panning round and cuts between the man and the woman and the band. The video then shows the car pulling up to motel with the man hugging the woman close. The band shots pan round the main singer and the rest of the band, but mainly focuses on the singer. When the singer begins to scream again, they've edited it so that the camera looks like its shaking again to match the screaming. The next shot of the man shows him handing over a wad of money and a hand creeping round his face - this is symbolic later in the video. It then begins to show them in the bedroom, with the camera panning round to show a mirror and the camera twists round. One of the next shots of the band is a pan and it shows two of the band stop playing for second while drawing attention to the guitarist. The next line 'The moment's died' shows the woman trying to kiss the man and he pushes her away and she looks offended. The camera then shows the gas being empty, with it coming from the POV of the man. He fills the truck up and she tries to win him back but he just gets frustrated and drops the gasoline but it goes on her. They argue and he drives off - this can be show the end of the relationship or maybe to show frustration. He drives back to the motel and finds another girl and begins the same routine - the original woman finally reaches the motel after walking, and drapes herself on the truck before making her mind up. The door opens on the man and his new woman as the original woman hold the fuel tank and starts tipping it all over them and the bed herself. She strikes a match and then puts it in the oil, only to reveal it was water and she walks out by blowing them a sarcastic kiss. The main point of the video is to say that you have consequences for messing with peoples feelings, as the song reflects this.
Video Progress
15/10/15
Began to match the lip syncing to the song. I split up the video into where each part over laps each other - I have three different shots of the first part of the verse so it's easy to match them up and not have any gaps or any different bits.
17/11/15
Came to back to my music video. Began putting filters onto the video and rearranging and placing the chorus and second verse.
3/12/15
Filmed with Jacob and Chelsea and began to cut up the pieces that work and space them out and mix them into the shots of me singing. Began editing the shots - one of my scenes I have put into black & white and sharpened it up to make it look more concentrated.
Another scene I put into a similar colors using a color correcter - it looks like mix between white noise and black and white.
The other scene of me singing I have edited to look more intense - it is darker with the colours bright and the contrast raised to make it this way.
The scenes with my friends are edited differently - I left the scenes of Jacob asleep alone as they will show that this is reality while all his other scenes are edited to be dark and look unrealistic as this is to show the nightmare. Chelsea's scenes are all within his 'nightmare' and so all her scenes are edited to also look unrealistic.

Audience Profiling
A media product is made to be consumed but you have to know what audience to aim for. In This Moment aim for the crossover of the hard rock genre and metal genre, giving them an audience age of 15 to 53. I would be aiming for the same kind of age range.
They are related and advertised along a lot of bands - Maria also does collaboration with other bands, for example:
Papa Roach - Gravity
Five Finger Death Punch - Anywhere But Here
Motionless In White - Comtempress
Red Dragon Cartel - Big Mouth
P.O.D - Criminal Conversations
They did a huge american tour with Papa Roach & Five Finger Death Punch to help further advertise their album.
They are also considered part/related of the 'new grave' movement of bands, which Motionless in White are considered a part of. In the video 'Whore' the lead singer of Motionless in White was one of the main characters and New Years Day's videos are advertised alongside In This Moments. This means that In This Moment have a broad audience and have range of audience to target.
Out of their audience I would be targeting the new grave audience as they are younger side of the metal genre and are therefore more likely to listen, research the band and buy the CD/Merch.
I would target this audience by releasing a single on youtube with the music video and have it connected to a few of the similar bands the same way In This Moment has as my audience would then click on the video and watch. I would also promoted the single through music magazines and through social media - mainly Facebook and Instagram.

Christian Metz theory
Christian Metz was a theorist who was praised for his theory. His theory was that there was a stages which can be applied to every genre - Classical, Experimental, Parody and Deconstruction.
Classical
This is the an example of the classic - classic being an original piece that develops the codes and conventions for that genre. Frankenstein was an origin for horror films, along with Dracula and Godzilla.
Experimental
This began in the 70's and the 80's, where films changed their scenarios and became more about psychological horror. This allowed for a lot of the new films being brought out in 2010's to look at their codes and conventions - there is the main killer, a white single female and usually a group that get massacred.
Paraody
In the 90's they took the classics or the lastest horror movies and added a comedy twist to it so that the films were not scary and this changed expectations for the films.
Deconstruction
The thriller genre began to find its way into the horror movie genre, creating long films that had two or three different twists. This also then changed into hybrid movies, with two or three genres being represented in one film.

Analysis of a Music Video - Wildest Dreams by Taylor Swift // Pop
The video begins with Taylor Swift in a large bold font with a long shot of grassland in the background. It cuts to an aerial shot of zebra's running through the grassland with the directors name in the same large bold font. It then cuts between a shot of the sun in the sky to a lighting director, maybe saying that the sun sets and shows finish. A shot of a giraffe with a fan in the corner shows the difference between the wild and man. It then shows the artist, Taylor Swift, for the first time, with her looking down in a mirrors reflection. The next shot shows a beginning of a film with a board being slammed down and a side shot of the light director and an old style camera. It cuts back to a shot of Taylor, with her makeup being done and the camera zooming out to reveal an old car in the back ground with a cut to a pan showing the set of the film. Taylor is then shown to still be having her makeup done, and then with her looking to left at a man. The man turns to look at her and she looks away.
The next scene begins to show them filming - the board is slammed together and a shot shows the director and all the behind the scenes people watching the scene. They kiss and the camera zooms forward past the cameras in the film as the line 'say you'll remember me'. The next shows him with his arms around Taylor with them watching a sunset as she shes 'standing in a nice dress staring at the sunset' - a quick cut shows them wear sunglasses that are from the 40's/50's era. The next shot lines up with the lyrics 'red lips and rosy cheeks', with his hand on her cheek and her smiling and looking down. The shot the changes to show the behind the scenes filming them. An aerial shot of a waterfall is cut into the shot of the Giraffe and Taylor in a long yellow dress. The dress can be symbol to show that she is free and yellow also means a few things - it means happiness but can also mean jealously.
The next shot matches the waterfall - they are stood together on top of the waterfall - this is to further emphasize the romance between their on screen characters.
The next scene shows them in a bedroom with the mise en scene being that of a safari lodge. It shows further proof that this is set in the 40's/50's - there is a gramophone in the corner, old style suitcases stacked on drawers, they're drinking brandy, there is a hat that a woman would have worn in the 40's.
The camera changes to show Taylor and the man having an argument on set - she walks off and the director just looks at the behind the scenes camera - this could be to show that she has feelings for the man outside of the film. They then go back to the scene mentioned earlier but another take - Taylor looks down and presses her lips together to try and get herself under control and they restart that scene.
The aerial shot of the zebra/wildebeest is resumed but with a plane flying over them and then its revealed Taylor is in the plane with the man flying. She wears a headscarf and cat eye sunglasses, showing the fashion of the women in the 40's. The plane is also from the that same era, The camera is off center with the plane in the left and shows the man swinging Taylor round when they've landed.
They then begin to cut between three different types of scenes - Taylor with a lion behind her/Taylor on her own, shots of her and the man acting and shots of the African grasslands. This is used to make the film look more romantic and put emphasis back on Taylor singing.
The camera then pulls back to reveal then in a studio with a background of the grasslands and all the behind the scenes people watching them act, with Taylor looking longingly towards the man and it is clear she has feelings for him.
The camera pulls back again as the scene changes to a huge premier - Taylor steps out wearing silk and fur with further shows the era as if you wear fur nowadays you are frowned upon. It cuts the man and a shot of his hands covered with the woman who is kissing him to reveal that they are married. A close up on Taylor face confirms that she has feelings for the man. She runs from the premiere with the man running out after her which suggests that he has feelings for her too.
The video is considered quite conversational as it is filmed in Africa in the style of the 40's with only white people in it, but is actually quite true to the time - only white Hollywood stars would have been in movies no matter where it is filmed.

Analysis of a Music Video - Bad Romance by Lady Gaga // Dance-Pop
The first scene is a group of people in a room. The women are all in gold and the men in black/shirtless. Gaga sits in the middle on a white throne in gold - this draws your eye to her. She has sunglasses on with razorblades around them - perhaps showing whatever she is seeing is painful. She then presses play on on a box, this is also product placement through the use of parrot box and the next shot has an iPod classic in it. Another product placement appears - clear glasses of "Nermioff' which appear later in the video.
The next scene shows pods, with the one in the middle saying monster with a red cross on. They then begin to crawl out of the pods as if they are newborn, and they wear white latex suits which cover them head to toe, showing the innocence of them. Lady gaga's suit has an open mouth, whereas the rest all have their mouths covered but can see.
This ties in with the next scene where she's in a bath tub, wearing earphones with huge, innocent eyes. This could be because hers were covered so she doesn't know what the world is. The earphones is product placement as lady gaga has her own brand of earphones.
The next shot is of her standing in the mirror, but it could be a flashback as she is dressed in black with her eyes covered.
One of the shots is gaga making a gun motion with her finger, maybe showing that she is too innocent to shoot it at this moment in time. The bath scene then switch to women pulling her out of the bath and her fighting it and then placing her on the side of the bath.
A quick shot of a close of lady gaga wearing very little makeup is used, again to show her innocence right now.
The women rip off lady gaga's shirt, perhaps showing that they have the power and that women in the media constantly degrade each other. Then make her drink something, which could be the alcohol from the start, and she fights it. Another of the close up scenes is used but shes in tears this time, showing that the innocence is broken and she knows the real world.
The next scene shows a ring of women trying to tear a coat of lady gaga. The coat has words on it, maybe showing what she thinks in her head. They rip it off and she acts as if she's naked and not in clothes, but her clothes are very sexualised and all diamond. The shot pulls back to show a ring of men, drinking. She then joins in on the dancing almost as if she releales if shes goes along with she can escape.
Another scene is shown where shes in a very dark room compared to the other room, and shes on her own as if this is where she goes when shes not paraded in front of the men.
The next bit in the white room is sit crawls along the floor and sits on a mans lap, relating to the next scene where men are bidding for her. Its like shes figured out if she goes with him she can get away from the women. The women can also represent other women in music or the media and how they sexualise everything.
The next scene is she is all in black and posing in the middle of a group of men, with another scene that joins it of her spinning in a wheel. She is wearing the same outfit in both of these, but in the wheel she is dressed slightly more futuristically.
She also is then in the dark with a strange outfit on, and at the end of this scene she fires the guns, showing that she has the power but has been making the power on her own.
It then changes to a scene of her walking towards the man that bought her, she has sunglasses on so that he can't see her eyes or intentions. A dance scene begins too, wear she is back in the white room but it is dark and she is dressed in a red outfit, showing that she has no innnocence but she has power. The crying scene appears too, showing that she maybe regrets what shes about to do but it had to happen for her to escape. The bed sets on fire and the guy is trapped in the flames, and the vevry last scene shows his skeleton and gaga on the bed, with her in the black outfit with smoke, and a cigarette hanging out of mouth.

Analysis of a Video Game - Fallout 4
This is a trailer for the popular series of Fallout. The series follows a post apocalyptic wasteland, with most of the games taking place in the 22nd and 23rd century, following survivors after a nuclear war in the 50's.
They released this trailer to promote the release of the game, which is coming in early November. The trailer switches between showing the 50's and the future, showing the destruction in between. The first shot of the trailer is a mid close up showing a television with the emergency please stand by message showing with diegetic white noise. The shot then begins to zoom out showing a weathered and decayed house, with it showing the living room. As it pans round, it then switches to how the house was in the 50's, with clean walls and no broken furniture. It then switches back, with a dog standing in the doorway, showing the first signs of life. The house also shows that nature is beginning to take the world back, with a tree growing through the roof. The dog walks through a kitchen and the camera follows, with it then changing back to the 50's. A robot is then shown carrying milk, with it switching back and forth to the past and future - this also can show that humans were more advanced then, but the robot also says that we were responsible for our own destruction as robots have the stereotype of destroying everything. The camera continues to pan round showing the dog walking through the hallway - the hallway shows decay worse then the front room did. The doors hang off,the frame are rusting or peeling, there is debris all over the floor and a pile of leaves suggesting that its autumn. It follows the dog into a child's room - this is shown by a crib and toys scattered about. It flashes back to the past, showing the first people in the trailer, bending over their children and playing the mobile. It then changes back to the dog nosing the mobile - this is to make the audience sad for the child as you don't know the fate of the baby yet. The dog then runs through the town - the town showing the same level of decay and shows a wasteland. The editing cuts back to the 50's - people run down the road with a plane flying low above them. It then continues to show and cut between the dog and the 50's.
The editing then cuts to door moving backwards. It then begins to show some of the scenery and more of the game play - it shows a post apocalyptic wasteland with everything abandoned and makeshift cities. This is to make the audience excited to walk through the game themselves as it shows the different parts of the map.
The trailer then shows what happened to the people at the beginning for the people who have never played the game before - a nuclear explosion happens, making the audience feel shocked and have sympathy for the people. Back to the dog - the camera follows and pans up showing a huge metal suit which has the face of the game. It cuts to show a long view - you can see a person beginning to walk up to the dog which changes to a mid shot revealing a man stroking the dog. He shoulders his gun and begins to walk off and the screen goes black. The logo and fallout being to show, showing off the name for anyone who didn't know it. The final frames are of the developers the website to find out more information.

Analysis of a Music Video - Paparazzi by Lady Gaga // Dance-Pop
The first scene in this video shows an expensive house, next to the scene and has been made to look like it is in Greece, and also resembles the white house.
The titles look like it from a film noir era, perhaps suggesting that it will take the same route or inspiration from the era. The chandelier shows wealth and old fashioned house along with the money has lady gagas face on it showing that at this point of the video she has all the power and wealth.his also also product placement through the fact that a pair of headphones is slung over money, which could be a earlyversion of lady gaga's headphone brand.
Another product placement is used within the next scene, with "DIOR" written on her rings with is a connection to their perfume and also her own branding of perfume.Within a minute and ten seconds there are plenty of product placements, but none of them directly related to gaga till her necklaces appeared, which she sold as part of her own branding.
This scene shows that the boyfriend has the power as he picks up her and takes her to the balcony. It also it directed towards the male eye as she is wearing a corset. It is also white, perhaps showing that she is currently innnocent.
When they get to the balcony, he then spots the paparazzi and starts to kiss her forceful, like he wants to be seen with her and having the power. She tells him to stop as she realizes who is watching.
She then punches him and he throws her off the balcony still displaying his power over her.
The next scene I think is to show a representation of how falling feels, she also ends up in a position that looks like jesus on the cross. When she lands, within all the blood there are jewels, again showing the wealth. The paparazzi crowd round to take photos, but you don't see any of their faces, showing that they are just nameless faceless force just there to exploit celebrities
The next scene shows lady gaga in wheelchair, with her assistants helping her. The assistant are all black men, suggesting towards the racial injustice in the world. She is also still in glamor, maybe showing that people in wheelchairs can still be glamorous. She also has sunglasses on, which she then lifts up a lid, showing that she was blind to her boyfriends actions but shes starting to see.
This scene is put into the video very quickly, maybe meant to be a subconscious thought. It shows a dead woman in the bath with bunny ears on, suggesting a wild party, but she'd dead. It's not clear who's hands she died by or whether it was her own.
She strips off and then begins to walk on crutches, showing her recovery. Shes wearing a gold outfit which relates into the wealth that she has. She walks up a purple carpet which shows royalty.
More dead girls flash by, one wearing a diamond jeweled mask, another dead on the stairs in a white outfit, showing the innocence in her. They could the past wives/girlfriends of gaga's boyfriend. The next one is almost in film noir style with 40's kind of style with the fur and next to the fireplace. The next one is dead next to pool, but doesn't look drowned. She also stays on screen for longer then all of the other, suggesting that she was important in some way.
The next dead girl a maid - but her blood is gold. It also says that all of these girls do jobs that are considered to be just gendered for girls, especially with next flash of the gardener.
The next scene is lady gaga on the settee with men styled like 80's rock stars - this suggests that gaga is trying to say that the media doesn't change, but also pleases the male eye because they are being very sexual towards each other.
The hanging girl could be a controversial piece of this video as MTV wouldn't be able to play and it could trigger someone, but it seems like this was put in to almost show the pressures of society and how some girls end up.
A dance scene starts after with lady gaga in an outfit that could be for a man and woman - its a jumpsuit which mean could wear but is feminine in the fact it has a skirt and a massive rose on her shoulder. It might also represent an internal struggle - the rose could be an 'angel' and the other should has nothing on it perhaps representing the devil.
She then goes into a blank wood room with lights flashes for the bridge of the song. In the flashes a dead girl in the leaves appears, maybe suggesting that gaga is to blame for her death.
In the next scene the maid reappears with gaga and the boyfriend. The boyfriend has an eye patch on and is reading the newspaper - the eye patch saying that he is blind to gaga's actions. She has more product placement on her in this scene - she is wearing a jumpsuit with mickey mouse on. 'The new it girl' magazine suggests that she is now back into a good place with the media.
The ring that looks the least lethal is what hides the drug she gives, suggesting that even the most softest of people can hide some huge secrets.
They don't look at each other in this scene, and gaga just mainly looks at the camera. She shuts the glasses and the places it on his head, showing that she now has the power and that he blind to her actions all along.
They take his body away and arrest gaga with the press still walking round her asking her questions again showing she has the power and will still come out of this in the good with press.

Analysis of a Short Film - Gasman by Lynne Ramsay
This is the film Gasman - It tells the story of a man having two families and their daughters not getting on.
It begins with showing a man's shoe being polished which straight away says that he is going to a important event. A little girls feet (Lynne) then run past and the camera pans up to show a hallway with the man sitting down. With the mise-en-scene you can tell that this is set in 70/80's along with the diegetic Christmas music in the background.
A woman speaks and you can immediately tell that they are Scottish from her accent.
The next scene shows a boy (Steven) running a toy car over a mantelpiece. He pours salt over it with dietetic music in the background with 'let it snow' playing.
A man is shown smoking, perhaps saying that he is stressed, or is just part of a routine. Clothes are exchanged, and it goes back to Steven playing with the salt. He turns over the car and makes noises like the car has been in an accident - perhaps saying that this is a fear of his or that although it is near Christmas he's unhappy as he made a mess with the salt and the car had an accident. The scene then changes to Lynne and she is rushing as she tries to pull up her tights and put on her shoes. The camera is very angled so that we don't see her face at all inside the house. She does a little dance for her mother and then does the 'there's no place like home' from the wizard of oz - perhaps saying that this is her favorite film or she relates to it in some way. She then gets cornered by her mother, and as she tells her to life her arms up the camera cuts to the very top of her hands. It slowly pans down to her head where she complains her mother is hurting her as she pulls down the dress.
This then reveals her face which is the first face we see of the film. You see very little of the adults faces the whole way through, suggesting that this story is from the child's point of view or that adults are not important from their view.
The mother turns around and you can see that she is wearing a dressing gown - but underneath is a blouse and a pencil skirt, suggesting she is off to work or about to go to a event.
The camera pulls back and pans round as she shuts the door and goes to stand by the window - the reflection the window still covers her face, you don't see her eyes at all so you are left to use the rest of her body language to figure out how she's feeling.
The next scene shows the father swinging his daughter round as his son catches up and them walking over train tracks. The camera pans up showing him giving his daughter a piggy back while his son trails behind and this shows that he has a better relationship with his daughter. The shot has all the flats behind them which shows that this could have been set in Glasgow. They've edited the show to have vignette around it, which could show that this is like a faded memory or a memory for the children. The father then puts Lynne down and you can see him looking for someone - the camera then changes to sit behind the daughter and you see another woman and two children with her - another young girl and boy. The camera angle on Lynne shows her looking angry/suspicious towards the new arrivals. She gives the other girl a dirty look and calls them tramps, perhaps saying that she doesn't want to share her dads attention.
The scene then changes to a conversation between the dad and the other woman. She looks at him right in the eyes throughout the conversation and he looks down and rarely meets her in the eyes - this says that he is guilty of something, which is cheating. She asks why he hasn't been to see her and he evades the question - this further backs up the look of guilt he has in his body language and she sees this. A close up happens of him reaches out to touch her hair and her moving away, showing that she suspects he isn't being truthful and doesn't want him to touch her until he is.
The two girls begin talking with Lynne being quite forceful onto the other girl - Elise. They make friends and hold hands while running through the train tracks - a symbol of innocence and friendship.
The mise en scene in the next scene is that of a pub dressed up for Christmas - there is a Santa dancing with a child and tinsel and a tree. Men are drinking and smoking while sat in corner showing that this is a Christmas party or a potential work Christmas party. The two girls dance together with dietetic music playing in the background. The dad seems lost to his thoughts. The boys in the pub all begin to playfight while the girls all dance together with the Santa.
Lynne sees Elise with her dad and finally realizes that something it going on - the camera is mid shot showing all of her face and has emphasize on her eyes. Lynne then goes to confront her and exclaims that its her 'daddy's knee' and Elise says that its hers. Lynne then begins to scrap with Elise. Their dad ignores it until he steps in and then tells Lynne he doesn't care about their scrap and ignores them - this can show hes trying to hide that he has another family or that he could be trying to discourage her and make her think she said something else.
The scene then changes to them walking home, with Lynne saying she doesn't want to hold hands with her - they have lost the innocence they had earlier with that statement. The boys also keep constantly barging shoulders and bumping into each other. The camera becomes a close up their hands, showing that Lynne is gripping hard. The end scene is of Lynne picking up a rock and eventually deciding to not throw it at her dads other family, showing that maybe she doesnt have bad feelings towards the other girl after all.

Short Film
Definition -
A short film is defined as 'an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits'. Short films have been around since the beginning of film making, they used to make short comedy's and they usually came in a series.
Short films are also used a filler for when a program doesn't fit the standard broadcast time.
They are also a small 'snippet' of life. They are often uploaded to YouTube and are considered to be a way for young directors to be noticed. They are also good for promoting the main film - pixar often do short films after the film, for example monsters university has party central, linking to the part of the film where they are in the fraternity house.
Another example is of the film Tangled. After the movie they made a short film linking back to movie and using the same characters to explain a small part of their lives.
There are several codes and conventions of a short film - they usually are under half an hour.
Short films often stick to 2 or 3 characters - sometimes they have more but it is difficult to create a short story and have the audience relate to the characters in such a short space of time. Most include a plot twist or a shocking moment - this keeps the story interesting and draws the audience in. They are often low budget as aspiring director often use short films to put their name in the world.

Analysis of a Music Video - Hurt by Johnny Cash
The video to this song was Grammy award winning and filmed in February 2003. He died seven months after it was filmed. The director - Mark Romanek - had previously worked with Nine Inch Nails, who originally wrote the song.
The entire video keeps in beat throughout the song, with one of the first images being of Jesus and fruit. The lighting on Johnny is the sunset - the end of the day is to symbolism the end of his career and life. The first shot we see of Johnny is his guitar, also to symbolize his career because that is what helped him to build it. When the camera cuts to johnny he isn't looking at the camera, he is looking out towards the sunset, as if he is facing his death, or reflecting on his life. His suit is also another relation to his career - it is the southern or 'country' version of a suit.
One of the next scenes is an american flag flying, portraying patriotism or just representing the fact that he is in america and is american. It then shows where the flag is attached to - the johnny cash museum. The next scene of the museum shows that it is closed to the public.
When Johnny sings 'I remember everything' it cuts to archive footage of when he was younger or 'in his prime'. They also use this when he sings 'Everyone I know goes away' and shows a photograph of his mother - this is called anchorage because it shows a image that could mean anything but will mean something to everyone.
Going back to the museum, it shows the inside of it. On the floor it shows a broken gold record, which was one of johnny's biggest achievements but it is broken and on the floor to show that the money and fame means nothing to him. They then show the archive footage of him the prison which was one of his most famous achievements.
They then show footage of him visiting an old house, and as he turns round showing his younger face is then cuts to johnny in the present while he sings the 'beneath the stains of time'.
In the video you see him at a table, as in like a last supper, with a big roast and fruit and crystal goblets and champagne, but its all rotten, showing again that he doesn't care for his wealth.
The next 'sweetest friend' cuts to a photo of him and his wife, and then shows a scene of her on the stairs behind him,but he doesn't look at her, almost as if he knows he is going to die alone. This links with next scene which shows him pouring red wine all over the feast goes back to Jesus on the crucifix right at the start - and the line 'I wear this crown of thorns' as the wine is the symbol of the blood of Christ and again relates to his immanent death.
In the last four lines they begin to show a montage of his life using archived footage with the words 'if i could start again a million miles away' perhaps saying that if he had the chance to start again he wouldn't have gone down the celebrity path.
The closing over the piano is another reference to the ending of something. He closes the piano and there is no music and it is there to represent the end of his music career and the end of his life.

Binary Oppositions
If there is no conflict there is no drama - meaning most films have opposites. For example, in westerns they often show the
conflict between the cowboys and the Native Americans. Another example is
through horror films – the conflict is between demons and human in the house usually. The person behind this theory is called Levi Strauss - he lived in the early 1900's. I used the example of sci-fi because it is a good example of oppositions - I used district 9 as an example. They challenge the opposition through the fact the main character then becomes a alien, but the main opposition is through the aliens and the humans. There is also opposition within the aliens camp as some of them don't get on with the other and constantly scrap over silly things. There is also conflict within the goverment - they won't let them have children, but some of the humans believe this is wrong.
