Christian Metz was a theorist who was praised for his theory. His theory was that there was a stages which can be applied to every genre - Classical, Experimental, Parody and Deconstruction.
Classical
This is the an example of the classic - classic being an original piece that develops the codes and conventions for that genre. Frankenstein was an origin for horror films, along with Dracula and Godzilla.
Experimental
This began in the 70's and the 80's, where films changed their scenarios and became more about psychological horror. This allowed for a lot of the new films being brought out in 2010's to look at their codes and conventions - there is the main killer, a white single female and usually a group that get massacred.
Paraody
In the 90's they took the classics or the lastest horror movies and added a comedy twist to it so that the films were not scary and this changed expectations for the films.
Deconstruction
The thriller genre began to find its way into the horror movie genre, creating long films that had two or three different twists. This also then changed into hybrid movies, with two or three genres being represented in one film.
